Xiaomi is working on launching its own laptop by the beginning of 2016.

Xiaomi is working on launching its own laptops by the beginning of 2016, and has held talks with Samsung for the supply of memory chips, says a report in Bloomberg.

The Bloomberg report quotes people who are aware of Xiaomi’s plans and says that the start-up aims to compete with premium laptops like Apple’s MacBook Air and Lenovo’s ThinkPad. Xiaomi, which is the world’s most valued start-up, was number 4 in the worldwide smartphone market share, according to IDC’s data.

DC data showed that Xiaomi shipped 17.9 million smartphones in the second quarter of 2015, which was was 29.7 per cent year-over-year increase. Xiaomi has also seen considerable success in India and is now in the top five smartphone vendors in the country.

Xiaomi’s key USP with smartphones has been high-quality specifications, with a heavy customisation of Android coupled with mid-budget and low budget prices. According to IDC, Xiaomi’s premium and entry-level devices like the Mi Note and Redmi 2 handsets have helped it increase its market share in China and other countries.

With Xiaomi now looking to venture into the laptop market, it remains to be seen whether they will continue with the high-end specs and low-pricing tactic as they have done with smartphones.

Xiaomi, which sees itself driven by the online model, not only manufactures smartphones but has also ventured into water purifiers, fitness bands (Mi Band), television sets, and other accessories for smartphones.
